Sometimes Faithfulness Doesn’t Look Extraordinary
The Faithfulness Nobody Claps For
When we think about faithfulness, we usually picture something big: the missionary who sells everything and moves overseas, the believer who stands firm under pressure, the leader who makes a brave sacrifice. Those stories are real, and they're inspiring. But most of us will never experience one of these extraordinary stories.
Most of us will live a life of missed work deadlines, un-finished chores, laundry, emails, school pickups, and the same prayer for the same person for the fifth year running. And Jesus has something to say about that kind of life.
"Whoever is faithful in very little is also faithful in much..." (Luke 16:10)
"Very Little" Means Very Little
Notice that Jesus doesn't say "faithful in a respectable amount." He says very little. The small stuff. The stuff that's easy to skip because no one's keeping score.
We secretly believe faithfulness is for the big moments, and the rest of life is just filler. Jesus flips that. He's saying the small things are exactly where faithfulness shows up, and exactly where it gets built.
Faithfulness isn't measured by the size of the stage. It's measured by what you do when no one's watching.
What It Actually Looks Like
It's not flashy. It looks like:
Doing the job well when no one will ever praise it
Keeping the small promise, like actually praying when you said "I'll pray for you"
Showing up in your marriage, your friendships, and your church during the boring seasons
Opening your Bible on the mornings when nothing seems to happen
Being honest about the little things, like giving back the extra change
None of this will ever go viral. And, all of it matters!
God Notices the Quiet Stuff
Here’s the truth: Scripture is full of a God who pays attention to the hidden places. He saw a shepherd boy tending sheep long before that boy ever faced a giant. He noticed a widow's two tiny coins while everyone else was admiring the big donations. And Jesus spent about thirty years in a carpenter's house in Nazareth before His public ministry even began. Thirty years of ordinary.
Small and steady faithfulness isn't a waiting room before the "real" thing. It is the real thing.
If You're Feeling Invisible
Maybe you're in a season where nobody sees what you're doing. The dishes, the deadlines, the daily obedience, the unglamorous perseverance. It's easy to wonder if any of it counts.
It does. The One whose opinion matters most sees every bit of it, and He doesn't grade on how it looks from the outside.
So keep going. Fold the laundry. Keep your word. Show up again tomorrow. You may never know what it's building in you and in the people around you.
Your quiet yes, repeated day after day, is not small to God.
A Saturday Night Prayer –
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for reminding me that faithfulness is not measured by applause, recognition, or extraordinary moments.
Help me to be faithful in the very little things, in the quiet acts of obedience, the daily responsibilities, and the unnoticed sacrifices.
When I feel invisible or insignificant, remind me that You see every prayer, every promise kept, every act of integrity, and every step of perseverance. Give me the strength to keep showing up, to keep trusting, and to keep saying "yes" to You day after day.
Teach me to value what You value and to remain faithful in the ordinary, knowing that nothing done for You is ever wasted.
In the name of Jesus, I say Amen.
